A common excuse not to take the time to draw is to think that if you don’t have a full hour or even 30 minutes to draw, you don’t have time at all. I know it’s one of my common excuse and I know that it is not true even if it really feels like it. My ideal way to draw is to have a chunk planned for it but it is not always gonna be the case. If I’m relying only on that, it will make me draw less which is the opposite of what I desire!
How I use chunks of time for art
For this exercise to feel more casual, I simply will draw on random sheets of paper when I draw during unplanned time. A meeting is dragging a this part of it doesn’t concern me much? sketching time!. Meeting starts in 5 minutes and I’m up to date with my quick tasks? Sketching time! I’m back from lunch 10 minutes early, why not sketch a little something instead of scrolling on my phone. Any random bits of time count in the end. Sometimes I will realize that I drew for 45 minutes at the end of a busy day. If your screentime can afford to be that high, those little minutes adding up deserves to be used in a worthy way.
Some is better than none
I’m not saying those tiny sessions can replace the efficiency of a real one hour session. I know it’s not the same but some is better than none. You’re still using the muscle, you’re still being creative. I’m not gonna work on an important project that way but I can still practice a lot of cool stuff with those minutes. And I’ll be honest, I’d rather those minutes belong to me doing my passion than to the empire of the ads machines aka social media.
Do what you want with it
You can keep the sketches, you can scrap them. It doesn’t really matter. Just draw!
I like the cut and paste my favorite ones in my sketchbook. It’s another fun way to fill up sketchbooks. Collage style 🙂
