Drawing inspiration from hardships feels special and hits different

About a month ago I had to get my last wisdom tooth removed and it has been a traumatizing event somehow. It did not want to come out, the dentists pulled and drilled in my mouth for an hour and a half.. Let me tell you I did not feel great for a while! During my recovery I mostly napped, read, napped and drew! Yesss even in pain and in a weird state of being high on painkillers I still craved art! Those art sessions felt different, I had ZERO expectations, I knew I was in recovery mode. This let me enjoy the moment and it felt different.

This is not my mouth by the way lol. I was so focused of my mouth being in pain that I decided to draw images of teeth. I found some references online that felt raw and went with it. It was inspired by my own experience. I also did a super quick drawing of a lady on the other page, again, with zerooooo expectation. No trying to make it good. Just putting pen to paper.

I surprised myself with this sketchbook spread that ended up being fun!

The takeaway from my experience

All this to say that it is worth to draw/do your craft even when you are outside of your regular normal state. Other ideas might come out. Who knows what could happen if you draw while sad, angry, in pain, tired.. Art is always there for us no matter how we feel, we shouldn’t put it aside for a ‘right time’.  Of course if you’re feeling really really bad, don’t put yourself in danger to draw…  But you get the message, if the inspiration is there and you can handle it even if not fully well. Maybe its worth a try! It made me feel better even if it was by short sessions in between naps and pain killers :).

Wishing you all a great weekend!
