Last year, in may, I went to Hawaii with my boyfriend. This was such a beautiful trip. Some of the best sights I have seen in my life and probably the best food I ever had. everything was so fresh! I knew I wanted to draw during my vacation but I also did not want to spend too much time on each drawing because I would rather enjoy the vacation itself. I realized that quick sketches could perfectly encapsulate the vibe/the feeling of what was happening around me!
Little fun facts + letting myself draw badly
I remember drawing this place and thinking oooooofff, i really messed up the proportions there ahah! But I was tired, up since 2AM and exited about arriving to my trip. It was my current reality. Also I wrote that I had a windowless window seat because that was the case. It was the first time it happened to me and I found that funny. Now I’ll remember this silly fact forever.
I think I drew this meal in the place itself quickly. I was still nauseous from the super greasy omelet I had eaten at the Minneapolis airport. Hours later we arrived and I drew my first view from the beach by the hotel. Just simple and quick.
I quickly drew the view from our room in the hotel. It might be the ugliest sketch of that entire sketchbook but it was in the moment and quick and I wasn’t gonna stay inside too long ahah.
Then I drew a a scene from a picture I took during a fun hike on Makiki Valley Loop trail!
Aside from the gorgeous views, I loved seeing all the local animals! I drew some I had the pleasure to see!! Well except the marine creature. We were in the waters at the beach and we thought a random blue string was floating then it stung my boyfriend and we realized it was a creature. I then googled and realized it is called a Portuguese Man o’war. I had to draw it and put it in my sketchbook. What an encounter!
I have seen many wild chickens out there! They are so cute!!! I especially loved this little family that was hanging out in a random parking lot. The chicken had so many little chicks and they were eating stuff on the ground.
I drew a fun selfie I took with my boyfriend ti remember even more vividly the view! It was pouring rain during that hike , we had to buy an emergency raincoat. We still did thewhole trail. We kinda looked like scouts from attack on titan. IYKYK.
Another nice view + a random cactus drawing that I didn’t bother to crop because I think it looks nice.
Make bad art on your trips!!!
You should make bad art during your trip. The act of sketching is making your memories stronger. I remember more vividly how I felt, the views, everything! You can always revisit old pictures and make a really nice artwork later on but I think the sketchbook sill needs to be fed so quick raw art. I’m glad I did it even if its technically some of my ugliest art! Its some of my more meaningful at the same time! If I had let the fact that it wouldnt be perfect stop me, I might have drawn nothing from that trip and just told myself I’ll draw it later at home, then never get back to it because the momentum is gone. Do iiiiiiiiiiiiiit!
